ELDER ABUSE
The United Stated Census Bureau estimates that California’s elderly population will double in the next twenty years. It is expected that incidents of abuse towards this rapidly growing population will increase as well.
In light of this, it is crucial that seniors, their caretakers and loved ones are able to identify and report potential cases of elder abuse. Unfortunately many cases of elder abuse go unreported. In 1994, The House Select Committee on Aging found that only one in 14 cases of elder abuse are reported to the authorities.
In 1992 California passed the Elder Abuse and Dependent Adult Civil Protection Act, which is designed to offer legal protection for those who report instances of elder abuse. The Act also provides definitions for four major types of elder abuse, which include:
The mishandling of an elder’s property. Examples range from the coercion of an elder into signing financial documents to telemarketing fraud. For more information about how to recogize elder financial abuse, visit Financial Elder Abuse.
The use of force or violence against an elder. Types of physical abuse include sexual abuse and the inappropriate use of physical restraints or medication on an elder. For more information about how to recogize elder physical abuse, visit Physical Elder Abuse.
Threatening behavior intended to inflict mental suffering on an elder. For more information about how to recogize elder psychological abuse, visit Psychological Elder Abuse.
The failure of a person holding responsibility for an elder or dependant adult to provide basic care for them such as food, water, and shelter. For more information about how to recogize neglect, visit Neglect.
