What is Actos?
Actos is a medication prescribed to people suffering from type 2 diabetes, and is the brand name for the chemical pioglitazone. Actos was approved for sale in the United States in 1999, and is manufactured by Takeda Pharmaceuticals, a Japanese Pharmaceutical Company. According to the New York Times, Actos had $3.4 billion in sales in the US in 2009.
Studies recently conducted by the European Medicines Agency and the FDA claim that prolonged exposure to Actos can lead to increased risk of bladder cancer. France and Germany have banned the drug because of these studies.
