ELDER ABUSE

PHYSICAL ELDER ABUSE

Physical abuse towards elders occurs when someone inflicts, or threatens to inflict physical pain on an elder. Although the following examples of physical abuse do not only affect elders, factors such as physical incapacity due to poor health, and dependence on their caretaker make elders particularly vulnerable to physical abuse.

Examples of physical abuse include:

• The use of force or violence on an elder.

• An attempt to inflict physical injury on an elder.

• Sexual abuse.

• The use of psychotropic medicine on an elder for any purpose or duration beyond that which was given by a licensed physician.

• The use of physical restraints on an elder for any purpose not authorized by a physician.

• Prolonged deprivation of food or water.
