What are Whistleblower Laws?

A 'whistleblower' can be anyone who reveals misconduct, whether by his or her employer or another business or entity. A number of state and federal laws have been passed to protect whistleblowers and to encourage them to step forward and shed light on illegal practices.

Most commonly, whistleblowers report fraud being committed against the federal or state government, or report violations of SEC regulations. Often, whistleblowers are persons with insider knowledge of "false claims" involving health care, military, or other government spending programs.
