ELDER ABUSE
PSYCHOLOGICAL ELDER ABUSE
Psychological elder abuse occurs when an individual threatens, harasses, or intimidates an elder with the intention of causing emotional distress. Although psychological abuse does not only affect elders, factors such as physical incapacity due to poor health, and dependence on his or her caretakers make elders especially vulnerable to psychological abuse.
Isolation
Isolation is a form of psychological abuse in which a caretaker or guardian prevents an elder from maintaining contact with his or her friends and family, against the elder’s will. Examples of isolation include:
• Preventing elders from receiving mail or telephone calls.
• Physically restraining or imprisoning elders to prevent them from meeting with others.
• Telling visitors that the elders are not available or do not wish to speak with them, against the elders’ will.
