Samsca Linked to Serious Liver Injury

In an FDA Samsca drug warning posted on January 25, 2013, the FDA warns doctors and patients that Samsca has been linked to an increased risk of developing irreversible, life-threatening liver injury. The FDA recommended that healthcare providers promptly perform liver tests in patients who are taking Samsca and experience symptoms that might indicate liver injury, such as:

Fatigue

Anorexia

Right upper abdominal discomfort

Dark urine

Jaundice, or yellowing of the skin and/or eyes
If physicians suspect that a patient’s symptoms indicate possible liver (hepatic) injury, the FDA recommends that physicians discontinue the Samsca prescription, institute appropriate treatment, and perform investigations into the probable cause.
FDA Samsca Drug Warning: Risk of Liver Injury
In its warning communication, the FDA stated that Samsca should not be re-initiated in patients with observed symptoms of liver damage unless the cause is definitively determined to be unrelated to treatment with Samsca. Any patient currently taking Samsca should consult their physician before making any changes in their medication regimen.
