Yasmin, Ocella, and Yaz Side Effects: Risks and Health Problems
Yaz Lawsuit Investigates Side Effects of Yasmin, Yaz, and Ocella
Yaz, Yasmin and Ocella are known as a “combination” birth control pills, which mean that they contain the hormones estrogen and progestin. Yaz, Yasmin and Ocella contain a common form of estrogen known as ethinyl estradiol and a unique progestin known as drospirenone, or drsp. Drsp is a relatively new type of synthetic progestin only approved by the FDA in 2001. Many people associate the higher risk of certain health problems, such as blood clots and related health issues, with the hormone drsp.
Yasmin, Ocella, and Yaz Side Effects: Blood Clots, Strokes, and Pulmonary Embolism
Medical studies found that oral contraceptives which contain the hormone drsp (as used in Yaz, Yasmin, and Ocella) may cause an increased risk of developing blood clots and related health problems. Two medical studies conducted in Denmark and the Netherlands were recently featured in the British Medical Journal concerning this issue. These studies found that drsp was associated with a substantially higher risk of venous thrombosis, a medical term for blood clots typically found in the legs. Also referred to as deep venous thrombosis or DVT, blood clots can become life-threatening if they move to the lungs, where they can cause a pulmonary embolism, or to the brain were they can cause a stroke. One of our clients shared her story about Yaz with a local news station after she suffered a stroke while taking Yaz.
Yaz Heart Problems
The FDA also found that for high-risk patients, Yaz, Yasmin and Ocella may also cause an increased risk of a severe heart problem known as hyperkalemia. Hyperkalemia is a condition caused by higher than normal levels of potassium in the bloodstream and can cause abnormal heart rhythms (also referred to as cardiac arrhythmias and heart palpitations). Severe hyperkalemia can lead to cardiac arrest and even death.

For many of these women, the damage to their gallbladder has required that they have their gallbladder surgically removed.
Additional health problems reported by women who have taken Yaz, Yasmin and Ocella include kidney problems, pancreatitis, and related hormonal problems.
