Yasmin & Yaz Side Effects

Yaz Lawsuits Investigate Yaz & Yasmin Side Effects

Yaz, Yasmin and Ocella are known as a “combination” birth control pills, which mean that they contain the hormones estrogen and progestin. Yaz, Yasmin and Ocella contain a common form of estrogen known as ethinyl estradiol and a unique progestin known as drospirenone, or drsp. Drsp is a relatively new type of synthetic progestin only approved by the FDA in 2001. Many people associate the higher risk of certain health problems, such as blood clots and related health issues, with the hormone drsp.

Yasmin, Ocella, and Yaz Side Effects: Deep Vein Thrombosis ("DVT), Stroke, and Pulmonary Embolism ("PE")

Medical studies found that oral contraceptives which contain the hormone drsp (as used in Yaz, Yasmin, and Ocella) are associated with a significantly higher risk of blood clots and related health problems. Two medical studies conducted in Denmark and the Netherlands were recently featured in the British Medical Journal and found that drsp was associated with a substantially higher risk of venous thrombosis, a medical term for blood clots in the deep veins. Also referred to as deep vein thrombosis ("DVT"), blood clots can become life-threatening if they move to the lungs, where they can cause a pulmonary embolism ("PE"), or to the brain were they can cause a stroke. One of our clients shared her story about Yaz with a local news station after she suffered a stroke while taking Yaz.

Yaz & Heart Problems

The FDA also found that for high-risk patients, Yaz, Yasmin and Ocella may also cause an increased risk of a severe heart problem known as hyperkalemia. Hyperkalemia is a condition caused by higher than normal levels of potassium in the bloodstream and can cause abnormal heart rhythms (also referred to as cardiac arrhythmias and heart palpitations). Severe hyperkalemia can lead to cardiac arrest and even death.

Q: What are Yaz and Yasmin?

A: Yaz and Yasmin are prescription birth control pills. Yaz has also been indicated to treat symptoms of PMDD (premenstrual dysphoric disorder) as well as moderate acne. However, the FDA recently found that some of the Yaz advertisements were misleading and overstated the benefits of the pill. (See the FDA Yaz Warning Letters)

Q: What are the differences between Yaz and Yasmin?

A: Yaz and Yasmin are combination birth controls that use the hormones estrogen and progrestin. All three birth controls use the progestin hormone known as drospirenone, or drsp. Yasmin (generic Ocella) was the original birth control pill to use drospirenone. Yaz is similar to Yasmin and Ocella except that it uses less estrogen and uses a 24/4 day cycle, while Yasmin and Ocella are 21/7 day cycle birth contol pills.

Q: Who makes Yaz and Yasmin?

A: Yaz and Yasmin are manufactured by Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals and originally developed by Berlex Laboratories, which is now owned by Bayer.
