Zyprexa Class Action Lawsuit

ELI LILLY DRUG LINKED TO DIABETES, OTHER BLOOD SUGAR DISORDERS

Zyprexa, also known as Olanzapine, is an atypical antipsychotic medication manufactured by Eli Lilly and Company that was approved and released on the market in 1996. Zyprexa is primarily prescribed for the treatment of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder but is also prescribed for the treatment of dementia and anxiety. Numerous lawsuits allege that patients who use Zyprexa have an increased chance of developing a number of allegedly previously undisclosed and inadequately disclosed side effects, including a variety of blood sugar disorders such as diabetes, hyperglycemia, ketoacidoseis, and pancreatitis.

In 2003, following the release of medical studies linking Zyprexa with the side effects of an increased risk of diabetes and hyperglycemia, the Food and Drug Administration required Eli Lilly to add a warning statement to Zyprexa's label that describes the increased risk of hyperglycemia and diabetes.

On June 10, 2005, Eli Lilly announced that it tentatively agreed to settle thousands of lawsuits and claims brought on behalf of persons who allege that they have been harmed by the side effects of taking Zyprexa that were not adequately disclosed ("Zyprexa side effects lawsuit"). The tentative Zyprexa side effects lawsuit settlement will pay nearly $700 million to resolve many of the claims of persons who allege that they have been harmed by Zyprexa's side effects.
